We must keep our lamps burning...

As a young woman, I often find it difficult to be selfless, to think of others before myself. Sometimes,it's so easy to get wrapped up in ourselves and our worries and cares, that we forget the true meaning of what it means to be disciples of Jesus Christ. His message was one of love...in fact His death on the cross was the most precious act of love that can ever be shown. He wanted to be an example to us so that we could go out into the world and love others as he did us.

"Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us."

-1 John 4:7-12

This is one of my favourite quotes, explaining that loving our neighbours doesn't have to be a huge thing that we have to do every day;

"Don't think that love, to be true, has to be extraordinary. What is necessary is to continue to love. How does a lamp burn, if it is not by the continuous feeding of the little drops of oil? When there is no oil, there is no light and the bridegroom will say: "I do not know you". Dear friends, what are the drops of oil in our lamps? They are the small things from everyday life: the JOY, the GENEROSITY, the LITTLE GOOD THINGS, the HUMILITY, and the PATIENCE. A simple thought for someone else. Our way to be silent, to listen, to forgive, to speak and to act. These are the real drops of oil that make our lamps burn vividly our whole life. Don't look for Jesus far away, He is not there. He is in you, take care of your lamp and you will see Him."

                                                                                                           -Mother Teresa

True love for your neighbour must be sincere, it must come from your heart. When we love each other, we grow more in the love we have for our Lord. In the end, it is this love that will save us from ourselves...
